DFI Returns on March 3rd!

Ireland’s original rap battle league is back! After several month’s hiatus, DFI have announced the line up for their first event of 2012 and it is huge. The Mezz venue in Dublin’s Temple Bar will host the March 3rd show, which will see DFI’s top battlers take on some of Britain’s best in a series of Ireland vs. UK match ups; including the long awaited Redzer vs. Pamflit and Nugget vs. O’Shea battles.

There will be a total of eight great battles on the day. Doors open at 2pm and entry is 10 Euro. It’s a jam packed line up as always from DFI, so be sure to get down to the venue early to avoid disappointment. Check the flyer below for full listings and information.

Lil’ Kim Reportedly Owes Over $1 Million In Taxes, Rapper’s Camp Reacts

Maybe Lil Kim has been paying a little bit too much attention to her ongoing spat with Nicki Minaj, but it seems she has taken her eye off the ball with her personal affairs of late, with TMZ reporting that the New York rapper has reached a milestone $1 million owed in taxes to the US Federal government.

In a statement that launched a scathing attack on TMZ and their intrusion into the lives of certain celebrities, CJ, Lil Kim’s publicist also said, presumably confirming the reports;

“LIL’ KIM has hired professional attorneys to handle this matter (embellished by all standards via the media), and that she, along with her team of legal experts are working cooperatively and diligently with the I.R.S and federal authorities to amicably resolve the situation.”

It is believed Kim has amassed an IRS bill of $1,026,862.42 since 2002. Lil Kim joins Lil Wayne, Bow Wow, Nas and others in the IRS black list for tax issues.

Lonely are the Brave… Maverick Sabre to set the UK charts ablaze this week…

For many of our readers, the rise of Maverick Sabre to the creme de la creme in the UK charts has been closely watched with a mixture admiration and pride. Most will remember the young rapper gracing Irish stages long before he set sail for the bright lights of London and have been in his corner ever since, singing his praises to all who will listen. Now is the time for Mr. Stafford to take his first full step into the spotlight, when the hard work really starts to pay off. Tomorrow morning, on Monday 6th February, his first album “Lonely are the Brave” goes on sale across the UK.

As most here in Ireland will know, Maverick started off on the club and concert support circuit, making a name for himself through his hard-hitting rap style that made him a stand out act when he took to stage with the Rap Ireland crew, and later when he featured on numerous Irish mixtapes, including Sense the Terror with Nucentz and Terawrizt. With the tireless backing of Belfast’s Matt Agnew in those early days, Mav had an intensity of purpose that set him apart from others in the Irish scene, with a clear desire and drive to make in in the music business. That desire manifested itself into opportunity on 28th January 2007, when Maverick was to join Rap Ireland in supporting Plan B at The Village in Dublin. This was to prove a fateful introduction, with the English chart-topper taking the young Wexford man under his wing. It was this close musical relationship to Plan B that further encouraged Maverick to take the plunge, to move back to London and dedicate himself full-time to his musical craft. The rest as they say, is history.

It has been a blockbuster year for Maverick Sabre. It is just 12 months since he stormed onto the mainstream with his feature on Professor Green’s “Jungle”. While he may yet to become a fully household name across the UK and Ireland, 2012 looks like it will be that breakthrough year. As we here in Ireland have already heard the album, we won’t ruin the anticipation for our UK readers – needless to say it is a must-hear. If you are in the UK, make sure you get your hands on “Lonely are the Brave”, the work of a truly deserving artist.

Lethal Dialect: LD 50 Part 2 (Album)

2012 is looking bright for Irish Hip Hop, and Blanchardstown emcee Lethal Dialect has raised the bar once again with the eagerly awaited release of his second album LD 50 Part 2.

Following on from the release of his highly-respected debut album LD 50 last year, the 23 year old has made waves in the Irish hiphop scene and media alike; with his track featured on RTE’s critically acclaimed LOVE/HATE series, ongoing press coverage in Ireland’s largest publications and a variety of appearances on National Broadcasts. Lethal Dialect also recently won MTV Iggy’s Artist of the Week, in addition to an impressive performance at Whealan’s One to Watch 2012 Showcase Festival.

Renowned for his compelling story-telling skills, poetic lyricism and relatable content, LD 50′s second instalment is even more impressive than its predecessor. Continuing on with the winning formula from his debut album; the production on part II is also of the highest quality. Talented producer G.I takes the reigns once again, in addition to JonnyBoy (Ath Cliath Records), Mook (Sons Phonetic) and Belfast’s Noize Thievery, with a range of hard-hitting beats that perfectly compliment Lethal’s honest approach, concept-driven themes, intricate word-play and rhyme schemes.

LD also refrains from diluting the record by keeping the collaborations limited to a select group of emcees; with powerful features from Street Literature duo G.I and Costello, Tommy Hand, Sons Phonetic emcee Mouse, Ath Cliath rapper Jambo, and Ballymun singer Willa Lee. Fans of Lethal Dialect should also keep an eye out for his affiliate Costello’s forthcoming solo album release Illosophical, due out soon.

Released last week, LD 50 Part 2 is available for purchase HERE on I-Tunes. Rightly receiving a 4/5 star review by Ireland’s biggest music publication Hot Press, this is one hip-hop album certainly worth investing in!

Nicki Minaj on Grammy Nominations [VIDEO]

According to Nicki Minaj, her career will have many Grammy Awards, just not this year. Having been, as she describes it, a “nobody” at last year’s Grammys, Minaj is now gearing up to perform at this year’s event, while also holding down nominations in 3 categories.

Speaking about the whole process, Nicki said;

“I’m not going to be nervous about winning because I really don’t think I’m going to win anything. I know eventually in my career, I’m going to have Grammies. This year is just about being nominated and feeling grateful, feeling like my fans and I have come a long way.”

K’NAAN: Mitt Romney Stole My Song

In a bizarre turn of events this week, Canadian Hip-Hop star K’NAAN found himself in the spotlight at the centre of the U.S 2012 presidential campaign, and not necessarily on the side he would favour.

It all started on Tuesday night, when Republican candidate Mitt Romney used the African singers smash hit “Waving Flag” as part of his victory speech at the Florida primary. Needless to say, K’NAAN was not impressed, coming out yesterday to clarify that the use of his song was both unauthorized and unwelcome.

“I have not been asked for permission by Mitt Romney’s campaign for the use of my song,” K’NAAN said in a statement. “If I had been asked, I would certainly not have granted it.” K’NAAN clearly set his political allegiance in stone, stating, “I would happily grant the Obama campaign use of my song without prejudice,”

It is unknown if the artist will push this any further.

Rick Ross Inspired After Working with Dr. Dre

Rick Ross became the latest new-school hip hop heavyweight to enter Dr Dre‘s studio earlier this week, when the two came together to collaborate on an as yet undisclosed project. It has not been announced whether the collaboration was for the long awaited Detox album or whether Dre was simply doing some work on Ross’ upcoming LP, God Forgives, I don’t. In any case, it appears the experience was once in a lifetime for Rozay, who came out to speak about it;

“It was amazing, my brother,” said Ross. “We had the opportunity to just first and foremost touch base like bosses. We went out, we had dinner, we just discussed ideas and that led to the studio. The advice he gave me, it’s already affected the way I’ve been in the studio for the last week. So let’s just say he’s full of knowledge and he’s a solid guy. Most definitely that’s maybe my biggest hip hop influence in the game.”

“A lot of times when you sit back and you watchin’ greatness in motion, when I think back to [N.W.A's] Straight Outta Compton or [Snoop Dogg's] Doggystyle and I think about the smallest things from the skits to the way the records ended to having the opportunity to ask him about certain things about those classic albums,” Rozay continued. “To just hear the time that was put into it, and the format, it was really priceless knowledge. For him to acknowledge Maybach Music and what I’m doin’ as an artist and a CEO, that was just real inspirational.”

The release of God Forgives, I Don’t was delayed last month due to Ross’ medical problems. We await a new release date.
