Guru’s Letter: Is it a fake??

As the dust settles on the untimely death of a Hip-Hop giant, the controversy surrounding that letter, alledgedly penned by Guru whilst on his deathbed, continues to build a head of steam. In a statement released today, DJ Premier paid tribute to his former group mate whilst addressing the letter: “We built a Hip-Hop Legacy together, and no-one can re-write history or take away my love for him. One thing I would never do is play around with the truth about his life

This comes following the mounting speculation that the letter, which stated Guru did “not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name likeness, events tributes etc” was possibly a fake. Guru’s producer Solar, who released the statement and was described as “my loyal best friend, partner and brother”, hit back at claims of fraudulance, tweeting “Guru made this statement from his own mouth and anybody saying different is insane with Hate!

Many fans have doubted that Guru would have penned such harsh words while suffering from a terminal disease and question how such a letter was even drafted, when the rapper failed to regain consciousness having fallen into a coma many months ago. The family of the deceased have distanced themselves from Solar and the letter, which outlined that Guru’s surviving son should be left in Solar’s care, and that “any awards or tributes should be accepted, organized and approved by Solar on behalf myself and my son until he is of age to accept on his own.” The family have openly questioned the authenticity of the letter and claim to have no knowledge of the charity foundation mentioned in the opening paragraph.

It remains to be seen what direction this story may lead. The letter mentioned instructions made to Guru’s lawyers, and this could ultimately prove to reveal the truth behind the controversy. Perhaps the saddest part to this story is that it casts a shadow on what should be a celebration of a true artistic genius.
