Throwback Thursday: Digital Underground

Ok to start off I’m completely aware that today is Friday. It’s Friday, Friday, getting down on Friday… anyone? But I thought of this nifty idea and had to do it now so I wouldn’t forget. Music is constantly changing and evolving into something new like any living organism. But when something changes too quickly,we repeatedly forget about the gems we had long before anyone heard of Eminem or Rihanna. So I was thinking, every Thursday we take a look at a group or individual from before the 2000’s and appreciate the good music we had then as well as now.

The first in the throwbacks is the Californian Hip Hop group known as Digital Underground. Digital Underground would be more known as a “family” rather than a group because the personnel changed with each album. The lead vocalist of the group, Shock G, would be one of the two most notable members within the group. The other member, and not many people know this, is none other than 2Pac. Yes, it was through Digital Underground that 2Pac went on to become a successful solo artist.  The most recognized song by the group is called ‘The Humpty Dance’, which was rapped by Shock G’s alter-ego Humpty Hump. Some of you may recognize said track from the movie Step-Up 2 but the song originally appeared on the groups debut album Sex Packets.

2Pac made his debut on the groups second album This Is An EP Release, appearing on the track ‘Same Song’. Shock G was responsible for producing 2pacs break through single ‘I Get Around’ and he also co-produced Pac’s debut album ‘2Pacalypse Now‘ The group went on to release further albums but finally agreed to take an indefinite hiatus in 2008. According to reports, Shock G wanted to create music that would not suit the style of the group.
